Risky Whiskey is a combination of mayhem, attempted murder and booze. Pepper is in New Orleans, her hometown, for a cocktail convention. One of the bartenders is found unconscious in his room and there’s an empty whiskey bottle lying near him. They soon discover the bartender drank poisoned whiskey. Is someone trying to cause a scene at the convention? Or was this personal?

Risky Whiskey is the first book in Lucy Lakestone’s Bohemia Bartenders Mystery Series.

Wow! I am out of words. Of all the cozy debuts I have read this year, Risky Whiskey is the best! The mystery keeps you on the edge of your (tipsy) toes, the sizzling romance and a chase that takes one on the streets and bars of New Orleans.

Neil heads the Bohemia bartender group. Neil and Pepper strike a chord immediately after the whiskey poisoning. They go in search of clues. The sexual tension between them becomes obvious as the story proceeds. But the duo have an attempted murder case to solve, romance can wait, thank you very much!

Lucy Lakestone is a marvelous storyteller. I had no trouble following the story or the characters. The Bohemia bartender team consists of three more people – Barclay, Luke and Melody. The Bohemia distillers are cousins Dash and Travis.

The mystery is well-maintained throughout the story. The red herrings were plenty and it was difficult to identify the perp until the end. A dramatic event – fireworks included – leads us to the ‘Fall of the not-so-tipsy perp.’

Sizzling mystery, a dash of lemon and berries, a splash of humor and excellent storytelling make Risky Whiskey an entertaining and totally engrossing cozy read. Go a little less on the cozy and more on the whiskey. 😀
