A wonderful and heart-warming short story about Christmas. I absolutely loved this book! The story is about Santa, love, family, and beliefs – a perfect book for Christmas. The story is as narrated by Stella.
Stella’s daughter Mille stops believing in Santa and this disturbs Stella. Her little princess who used to love everything about Christmas has suddenly started hating everything about it! Stella tries to convince Mille that Santa Claus is for real and she believes in him even though she’s an adult but Mille says no. This creates a rift between the mother and daughter. Stella, not knowing what to do, goes to her mother where she learns that the Santa Claus that she believed in as a kid was … well, I am not telling you that and ruin the suspense! But I can tell you that Stella is flabbergasted to hear the truth!
The story is also a bit hilarious in the middle, especially the scene which involves a very naughty child named Gustav.
The story is translated from Danish to English. I have read a couple of translated Scandinavian works before and I must say that there is something about Scandinavian writing that makes it charming and unique. Him With The Beard is no exception. Pernille has beautifully concocted a story that involves secrets, love, and Santa. Her storytelling skills are absolutely brilliant. I really liked the way the mother-daughter bond is portrayed. Twice. The bond between Stella and her mother, and the bond between Mille and Stella.
As I have mentioned before, this is a perfect book for Christmas and I recommend to all those who love to read a good and charming story about Christmas.
