Meet Chief Inspector John Shadow, a reserved and solitary figure who prefers to spend time alone rather than socialize. He’s partnered with a young and overly enthusiastic Sergeant named Jimmy Chang. Shadow does not understand Jimmy’s love for electronic-note-taking devices, sneakers, leather jackets and jeans. But as they are paired together to solve cases, Shadow starts to like the young man. He also spends a customary week-day dinner followed by a game of Backgammon with Jimmy’s grandfather at their Chinese restaurant.

Shadow is doing his best to avoid the madness surrounding York’s Viking Festival. #4: A Roman Shadow
As Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year approach, the city of York is busier than usual and so is Chief Inspector John Shadow. First, a theft at the Eboracum Museum and then, a missing Chinese tourist. As bodies begin to drop like flies, Shadow and his sidekick Jimmy Chang wonder if the two cases are connected.

Decades later, another man is killing in similar circumstances.
