Title: The Secret Adversary (Tommy and Tuppence #1)

Author: Agatha Christie

First published in 1922

Genre: Golden Age Mystery

Rating: 3 out of 5.

The Secret Adversary is the first book in Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence Mysteries.

The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie marks the beginning of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford’s sleuthing journey. Set in the aftermath of the great war, Tommy Beresford and Prudence ‘Tuppence’ Crowley find themselves flat broke. Serendipitously crossing paths, they decide to embark on a daring business scheme: Young Adventurers Ltd. – “willing to do anything, go anywhere.” Hiring themselves out proves to be a smart move for the couple.

Their first client is a mysterious Mr. Whittington of Esthonia Glassware who wants to hire Tuppence for a covert job in Paris. Tuppence is to pose as Jane Finn and spend three months in the city of love. But with the assignment comes a bribe to keep quiet, a threat to her life, and the disappearance of her new employer. Now, the Young Adventurers Ltd.’s newest job is to play detective.

Where is the real Jane Finn? The mere mention of her name evokes a peculiar reaction across London, so profound that Tommy and Tuppence resolve to uncover the truth behind this enigmatic missing woman. Absent for five years, neither her body nor the secret documents she carried have ever been recovered. Now, post-war England’s economic resurgence hangs precariously on locating her and retrieving the vital papers.

As Tommy and Tuppence delve deeper into the mystery, they find themselves drawn into the clandestine world of espionage, working undercover for the British Government. But their investigation soon spirals into unforeseen peril, surpassing any danger they could have envisaged – a peril that threatens not only their fledgling enterprise but their very lives.

Read Christie 2024’s selection for February 2024 was The Secret Adversary and I eagerly anticipated revisiting its pages. Having previously read the novel and also watched its television adaptations (Partners in Crime, 2015; and Partners in Crime, 1983-84), I held high hopes for an enjoyable re-read.

While the first half of the story captivated me, the second half felt somewhat laborious and occasionally disjointed. Nonetheless, I found the initial exchange between Tommy and Tuppence particularly delightful – “let’s chew a bun.”

Tuppence’s vibrant energy and penchant for novelty stand in contrast to Tommy’s measured and mature demeanor. Yet, together, they form a harmonious duo, not only romantically but also in their sleuthing endeavors.

The mere mention of Jane Finn’s name seems to stir waves of tension across the country, thrusting Tommy and Tuppence into the heart of espionage during their inaugural sleuthing adventure. Yet, their involvement in this perilous pursuit threatens their very lives. Initially, Tommy encounters danger when he is struck on the head while engaged in his investigative efforts. Subsequently, Tuppence mysteriously vanishes.

My earlier mention of finding the storyline disjointed was primarily in reference to these pivotal moments – the unexplained disappearances of Tommy and Tuppence during their investigation. While Tommy’s absence is later accounted for, Tuppence’s remains shrouded in mystery. An equally detailed exploration of both Tommy and Tuppence’s disappearances, from each of their perspectives, would have made the story better.

The conclusion felt somewhat rushed, with a couple of discrepancies regarding Jane Finn’s true identity. While these discrepancies served as red herrings, they were poorly developed, failing to add depth to the narrative. Additionally, the revelation of the perpetrator’s identity was laden with red herrings, leading to uncertainty about a particular character’s trustworthiness, only to be disproven later.

Overall, The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie serves as a promising introduction to the series. Tuppence’s vibrant energy was a highlight, yet the story as a whole lacked the depth to truly captivate. It’s worth noting, however, that this work originated during Christie’s early writing career.
