Sebastian Carter is released from prison after serving six years for a murder he didn’t commit. His mentally challenged stepsister Lily was raped by a man named Blythe. Later, Blythe was found dead and a cap belonging to Seb was found at the crime scene.
Seb’s family members are gangsters. He didn’t follow his father or brothers’ footsteps. Yet he got caught in their mess. Now that Seb is out of prison, he wants to know who set him up. Meanwhile, back home, Lily has a carer named Ava Harper. She’s come to the Carters under a false pretense.
Seb doesn’t like liars but when he learns of Ava’s story, he’s intrigued. He wants to help her and wonders if the answers she’s looking too might lead him to the mystery he wants to solve.
What a fantastic, gripping, and completely engrossing gangland thriller! From start to finish, this story kept me hooked. It’s an Evie Hunter novel so it goes without saying that storytelling is simply fantabulous.
We have two mysteries here – 1) Seb wants to know who set him up 2) Ava wants to know what happened to her mother. Ava’s mother walked out of the house one day and never came back. Ava’s dad tried to find her, filed a missing report, but there was no development in the case.
Meanwhile, Jason (Seb’s father) learns that one of his rivals had an eye for Lily before she was sexually attacked. Was that person involved in the attack?
Multiple PoVs, multiple red herrings and two mysteries are sure to keep a reader guessing for more. There are major twists in the second half of the story. The missing piece of the puzzle is finally revealed and boy, this was a mind-blowing shocker!!
Likeable characters. I found the side stories intriguing too. This is a fast-paced gangland thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you are looking for a gripping and completely riveting gangland thriller, I recommend you give The Kill by Evie Hunter a try.
