A Nose for Mischief is the first book in K.T. Lee’s Riverbend K-9s Mystery series.
Zoey Butler, a materials engineer at Future State Energy is working on her latest experiment in the lab when FBI special agent Alexis Thompson and her K-9 partner, Waffle, raid the premises and arrest the head of the development for fraud. After months of investigation and exhausting interrogations, Zoey finds herself jobless and unemployed.
She’s been applying to various jobs but as soon as they see her previous employer’s name in her resume, they “regret to inform” that they will not go ahead with her application. Desperate and out of options, Zoey reaches out to Alexis, hoping the FBI will provide some form of employment to Zoey.
Alexis asks Zoey if she likes dogs. When Zoey answers yes, she’s asked to join the Riverbend K-9 office. At the Riverbend K-9 Academy, Zoey meets Liam Graham, an FBI special agent and K-9 instructor. Zoey is paired with an overly energetic pup named Tasha. Things are going pretty well for Zoey when she receives a call from her sister. When Zoey mentions her problem to Alexis and Liam, they realize The Future State case is far from closed. And Zoey may be the key to solving it.
This is the first K-9 themed mystery I read and definitely won’t be the last. I am a cat person (we have 4 cats at home) but after reading this book, I think it is time to get a pup. (Ssh, don’t tell the cats!!)
The story begins with the events that led to Zoey losing her job. Her job search is not going well either. She lives with her sister and once again, fails to contribute to the monthly rent. Her sister doesn’t mind though. The siblings have only each other, after losing their parents a couple of years ago.
Desperate and hopeless, Zoey sends an email to FBI special agent Alexis asking if there are any vacancies at FBI that Zoey could apply to. Alexis is the head of Riverbend K-9 Academy. Zoey agrees to work as an unpaid intern as long as boarding is free. Alexis agrees to the plan.
At the Academy, Zoey meets Liam – a special agent and K-9 instructor. Zoey’s job involves observing the training. But soon after joining, she’s asked to handle Tasha – an overly energetic pup whose trainer is no longer working at the FBI. Zoey agrees and within weeks, Tasha and Zoey are an unstoppable pair.
But things change when Zoe receives a call from her sister. It becomes clear that Zoey’s previous employer has something to hide and only Zoey can find the missing puzzle that might finally give the FBI a much needed closure in the Future State case.
Zoey is an engineer and has no idea what it means to work in a slow-paced environment. When she sees the laid-back atmosphere at the K-9 academy, she wonders if this job is for her. But as days pass by, Zoey finds herself adjusting very well to her new ‘temp’ job.
I loved the setting – a K-9 training academy in a small town, and the theme – doggos and their FBI trainers. The mystery – fraud by a multinational company that boasts of research in renewable energy sources – kept me guessing till the end.
Excellent storytelling. Well-portrayed characters – including the furry babies. A mystery to keep one guessing till the end. The twist in the second half was totally worth it. I never saw it coming, mind. But wow, just when I thought things are going well for Zoey – Bang! A twist!
If you are looking for a K-9 themed mystery, you might want to give A Nose for Mischief by K.T. Lee a try. A completely engrossing, intense and riveting mystery.
