They’re perfect for each other
They just don’t know it yet
Becca and Charlie have known each other for years – since they met at the university. But they never got along. Becca’s best friend Ally was engaged to Charlie. Ally succumbed to pancreatic cancer before she and Charlie could marry.
Ally had a bucket list and now, it is up to Becca and Charlie to complete it. Ally wanted them to scatter her ashes at the places mentioned in the list. Though Becca and Charlie vowed not to see each other at Ally’s funeral, they cannot walk away… not from completing Ally’s bucket list… not from each other’s lives.
Ten years by Pernille Hughes is a heart-warming, touching, and completely magical love story. I don’t think I have ever read such a romantic story before. Absolutely fantabulous story!
The story begins with Ally succumbing to cancer and Becca and Charlie meeting each other at Ally’s funeral. They end up fighting and walking away from each other. Becca is a struggling actress while Charlie has a successful career. Soon after Ally’s funeral, Charlie went AWOL and a postcard from Bogota six months later confirmed his whereabouts. Meanwhile, Becca’s acting career has not taken off and she’s trying her best to make ends meet.
Becca receives an email from Ally – exactly a year after her death! Becca thinks Charlie is playing a sick joke by sending her an email from Ally’s id. But turns out, Charlie too received a similar email and he blames Becca for playing games with him. They both meet Ally’s mother one weekend – they tried to avoid each other but it so happens that they arrived at the same time. Ally’s mother tells them that Ally had a bucket list and she wanted Charlie and Becca to complete it. They are also asked to throw a bit of Ally’s ashes at all the places they visit.
So off go Charlie and Becca, meeting once each year to tick one item off Ally’s bucket list. As the story proceeds, we are told of the struggles that both characters face. Charlie has moved on – two years after Ally’s death – but Becca is not happy. She feels he moved on too early. Both characters have their share of ups and downs, not to mention their constant bickering and arguing at each meeting.
There comes a time when they both decide to call it a truce… but looks like the universe has other plans for them.
I suppose this story can be described in a sentence: If it is meant for you, it will come to you. Becca and Charlie never got along, or at least it seemed so, They were always bickering, mocking and arguing with each other. They never wanted to keep in touch after Ally’s death. But Ally’s bucket list forced them to meet – once every year. But as they start to complete the tasks, they grow closer, fall apart, call truce, fall apart once again…
I absolutely loved this story. This is the second Pernille Hughes book I have read and I must say, this is one of the best romantic stories I have ever read. Definitely my kinda love story (not to experience though).
I received an ARC from One More Chapter and NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.
