Weekly Wrap-Up, 29 August – 4 September, 2022

I have had an eventful week. We had a festival on Tuesday and Wednesday – Gowri and Ganesh Chaturthi. I was quite busy cleaning and decorating the puja room, and making sweets. For Ganesh Chaturthi this time, I wanted to make modak. It isn’t easy to make this sweet, especially if you do not have a mold to get the exact shape. My second attempt at making modak (first was two years ago) turned out to be successful.

Ukadeche Modak (white dumplings) are made of rice flour and water with a filling of grated coconut, jaggery, dried fruits and poppy seeds. We had a huge batch of frozen mango puree so I made mango modak – milk solids, mango puree and semolina. The leftover ukadeche modak filling was converted to laddoo by adding lai (a type of puffed rice).

I got a bit of reading done. I am still a tad slow and I don’t know what I must do to ring back my reading spree/spirit/mojo.

Books I read this week:

Steeped to Death by Gretchen Rue is the first book in Witches’ Brew Mystery series. I haven’t read a lot of paranormal cozy mysteries but this one was fantabulous. Magic, murder mystery and tea. Who doesn’t love tea!

Murder in Myrtle Bay by Isobel Blackthorn is the first book in Ruth Finlay Mystery series. Set in small town Australia, the story follows the sleuthing adventures of a freelance writer Ruth and her enthusiastic, elderly neighbor Doris. I had absolute fun reading this book.

Milkshakes and Murder by Christy Murphy is the third book in Mom and Christy Cozy Mystery series. I downloaded this book when it was free on Kindle. I was thinking of tackling my ever-growing TBR and randomly picked up this book. The mystery is good and so are the characters. Having said that, I felt something amiss throughout the story – I don’t know if this was because I hadn’t read the previous installments. Nevertheless, it was a good read.

I am planning to start When We Were Young by Dawn Goodwin today. Let’s see how it goes.

I took a break from participating in Blog Tours during the pandemic. I am back touring with blog tour hosts Rachel and Lori again. Expect a lot of blog tour posts in the near future. 🙂

Monthly Wrap-Up, August 2022

Thank you to all those who wished Peter well. We took her to the vet on Tuesday. She’s recovered 70% and will need a few more days of antibiotics. She’s feeling much better now. She runs around the place and eats well. She’s still weak and has to put on weight – She’s a big cat and currently weighs 3.3kilos. We are giving her Whiskas Tasty Mix and steamed fish fillets with rice and milk so hopefully she will put on weight soon. 🙂

Here’s a photo of Peter

(She sleeps till noon and has to be woken up for brekkie. 😉 )

  1. The modaks look delicious, Rekha. Have had them only once and the taste was fabulous. Hope you had a wonderful Ganesh Chaturthi.

    1. Thank you, Neeru. I too tasted modak for the first time when I made it two years ago. We usually make sweet poha or kheer.
