Marleigh Mulcahy, the daughter of hard-drinking parents who struggled to keep a stable roof overhead, grew up in a boxing gym. Her grandfather whom she fondly called Pops was the only stability in her life. She spent most of her time at Box-n-Go (the boxing gym) once Pops started fading away.
The gym is where she met EOD specialist Jace Holt. Marleigh refused to go out with him initially but when he stayed by her side during her toughest times, Marleigh fell in love with him. Jace took her to Nebraska to introduce her to his family. There, Marleigh learned that Jace had a troubled childhood.
The couple get married soon after and Marleigh is expecting their first child. Everything is going to be alright in their life… until it isn’t. Jace returns to active duty and ends up with a post traumatic disorder. This starts to create problems back home. Although, both of them had a tough childhood, they thought things might work out well but looks like life had other plans for them…
Where do I start? What do I say? I stayed awake till 2 in the morning to complete this story. I could not sleep until I knew how things turned out for Marleigh. What started as a simple love story turned complex and challenging when Jace returned to active duty, One baby after the other, Marleigh tries her best to keep things in control. But Jace’s traumatic experience creates a rift in the happy-family-life they both once envisioned.
Marleigh knew it was too good to believe when she met Jace and all his relatives told her finally he met someone good. But she ignored those doubts and gave it a chance. A chance at spending her life with a man she loved. She was soon expecting their first child and things got better for the couple. They moved into a better apartment, and Jace told her he would look after her. But Marleigh did not want to quit studying or working part-time at the tattoo parlor and the bar.
Soon came baby #2. Jace was once again called for active duty and things got even worse when he returned. He started losing his patience around his children and wanted to spend time in the pub. Marleigh heard her mother’s voice at the back of her head – the same voice that belittled her when she was a child.
Breach is a heart-wrenching story of a woman who would go to any extent make her family whole. She never had a happy childhood but she wants to give her children the best she could. She’s fallen in love with a man who promises her the moon and beyond. But he too had a troubled childhood. How far would he really go to keep his promise?
There are some stories that you will always remember. One tiny detail or something relatable that will always remain in your memory. Breach is one such story. It was really very sad to read what Marleigh was going through, especially in the second half of the book where things get worse and worse. But there is one thing that kept her going. Her resilience to not give up. In a way, I could relate Marleigh’s struggles to my experiences in life. It is so easy to give up when everything’s falling apart in life. But never giving up even if it means starting from scratch takes courage. A lot of it.
There are many things you can learn from this book. When the going gets tough, we learn to adapt, we learn to fight and we learn to change. We get used to the idea of getting out of our comfort zone and at the same time be prepared for whatever curveballs life throws at us. This is one gem of a book and I highly recommend you to read it.
