Genre: Mystery and Thrillers | Private Investigator
Toni and Sam were to get married. But Sam never made it to aisle. On their wedding day, Toni is dressed up and ready to leave to the venue when the police arrives at her doorstep with a tragic news. Her fiancé Sam was found dead in the Thames and he didn’t die alone. The body of a fifteen-year-old girl was found in his sidecar. On Sam’s phone is a text that suggests suicide. But Toni refuses to believe Sam had a ‘thing’ for underage girls.
The police conclude it as suicide and close the case. Toni hires Tyrone Swift, a private investigator to find the reason behind her fiancé’s death. As Tyrone starts to dig deeper, he realizes the reason behind Sam’s death is more than just a ‘love-affair-gone-wrong.’
Another masterpiece by Gretta Mulrooney! I have read Mulrooney’s Siv Drummond series and was eager to read Death by the Thames. I cannot wait to catch up on the rest of the books in this series – thinking of a binge reading session, anybody with me?
Though a ninth in the series, this book can be read as a standalone.
The story begins with Toni prepping up for her D-day. She’s in her wedding dress and just about to leave the house when she sees a police car stop by. The next few minutes are a blur – as the police talk to her about Sam’s death.
A few months later, Toni employs Tyrone Swift to dig deeper into the mystery surrounding her fiancé’s death. Toni’s friends think it is a bad idea. No matter how embarrassing the truth is, they want Toni to believe Sam had an affair with an underaged girl. But Toni thinks otherwise. She knows her Sam would never fall to such a low level.
As Tyrone starts to investigate, he learns a thing or two about the girl found with Sam – Naomi. On further investigation, he learns Naomi was a news raider and had affairs with old men. But how did Naomi know Sam? Nobody saw them together. There is no clue leading to the fact that Sam and Naomi had an affair. Then comes a twist… Something to do with Sam… and Naomi was involved too (not as you think, though.)
I was hooked on to the story and could not put it down until the end. Having read Gretta Mulrooney’s Siv Drummond series, I would say I absolutely love her storytelling. The character portrayal is excellent. The twists keeps you guessing till the end. Speaking of twists, the second half of the story is full of surprises so be prepared for a roller-coaster ride!
The ending is simply WOW! I did not see it coming. Nor did I think this-certain-somebody could have committed the crime. Tyrone is led ashtray alright, but the poor chap has no idea who is playing a dirty game with him.
Death by the Thames by Gretta Mulrooney is a mind-blowing, gripping and completely engrossing mystery. If you love private investigator mysteries, you might want to give this book a try.
I received a copy of the book from Joffe Books in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.
