Legally Blind Luck by James J Cudney

Legally Blind Luck is the seventh book in James Cudney’s Braxton Campus Cozy Mystery series.

Having binge read the previous three books of this series, I was eagerly waiting to see what’s next for our protagonist, Kellan. The last book – Frozen Stiff Drink – ended with a tragedy. There was an explosion at the airport where Kellan’s daughter Emma and his parents were to arrive from Disneyland. Meanwhile, back home at Wharton County, Kellan’s sister-in-law was thrown off a cliff by a maniac and she barely managed to survive.

Legally Blind Luck begins with the Ayrwick family coming to terms with the loss of Zach Danby, Kellan’s uncle and Ulan’s father. Kellan’s sister-in-law is still in recovery. Kellan learns Uncle Zach’s death was no accident. His South African girlfriend Renee contacts Ulan and tells him about the mysterious circumstances that might have led to Zach’s murder. Kellan is requested to investigate and bring his uncle’s killer to justice.

The murder mystery revolves around a 400-year-old (cursed) talisman. How was Uncle Zach caught up in this? It is up to Kellan to find out the truth. Kellan is (in)famously known as the ‘Unlikely Death Locator.’ If you haven’t guessed by now, then let me tell you – Kellan stumbles across a body. An FBI/ICE agent is brutally murdered with a spear through this abdomen.

The killer is out to kill anyone connected to the talisman – if only to end the curse. Will Kellan catch the killer red-handed before it is too late?

James Cudney has done it again! What a fantastic addition to my favorite cozy mystery series. A male protagonist, strong female characters, a dash of naughtiness (Kellan’s becoming bolder with each passing day), a whole lot of mystery and much more, Legally Blind Luck is a smashing hit!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I admit there was a time or two when I felt the story was a little dragged but it all made sense towards the end – sometimes you gotta give us the deets (and some more) so that Kellan finds it easier to zero in on the killer while we are stuck in the red herring maze. Right, James?

The mystery behind the cursed talisman and the slow unraveling of it is nothing short of a nail-biting moment(s). James is a very talented author and he’s outdone himself with this book (and every book he writes). When I read Frozen Stiff Drink, I never even imagined the next book would have something to do with curses and bloodbath. Phew!

Twists are plenty so stop trying to play detective or you might be embarrassed when Kellan proves you wrong. Excellent storytelling, well-portrayed characters and a mystery to keep you hooked on to the story until the end. If you are new to the series, it is highly recommended to start reading from the beginning – each book in this series ends with a tiny cliffhanger. If you have already read the first six books of Braxton Campus series, I am sure you would love Legally Blind Luck.
