From full-time librarian to part-time bartender, Chloe’s moved from Chicago to Panhandle, Florida, to keep up a promise she made to her late friend Boone. Boone’s grandmother Vivi runs a Sea Glass Saloon and Chloe’s here to help. Vivi doesn’t like Chloe sticking around but she chooses to keep mum. One morning, Chloe finds a bar patron dead behind the bar and all fingers point to Vivi. Chloe’s certain Vivi’s innocent so off she goes in search of clues, attracting the killer’s attention.

What a charming and fantabulous story! A mind-blowing start to a new series!

Chloe is someone you would like from the very beginning. A librarian-turned-part-time-bartender, Chloe is smart, dedicated and an excellent amateur sleuth. She’s taken a leave of absence from her job at Chicago to help Vivi. Boone, her best friend since college, was killed during a combat in Afghanistan. Before going, he had asked Chloe to look after his grandmother in case he didn’t make it back. And months later, here we are, Chloe keeping up her promise.

Though Rhett is handsome, Chloe doesn’t want to fall for him. She’s had enough ‘bad experiences’ so far and she’s done with falling in love… at least for the time being. Vivi is not happy with Chloe sticking around. But when she learns Chloe has no place to stay, she lets her live in Boone’s cottage. As the story proceeds, we see Chloe and Vivi’s relationship change – well, there are ups and downs but who’s counting?

I liked a dash or two of humor thrown in. We have a mysterious character making their appearance throughout – Ann Williams. She’s supposed to be the ‘handywoman’ or that is what Chloe is told. So off goes Chloe asking Ann to fix the toilet, repair the door and clean up the house…

Joaquin, Vivi, Ann and Rhett – each have a major role to play in the story. Chloe’s inner conflict (read mind chatter) is pretty obvious throughout the story. Halfway through, we see Chloe being threatened by the killer. I did not see this coming! You know how it is with small towns. Everyone knows everybody and it is difficult to keep secrets for long… They know Chloe is up to something and so does the killer.

The ending was simply mind-blowing. Chloe’s ‘light-bulb’ moment brings her face-to-face with her killer but her quick-wit saves the day, or in this case, saves two lives. The killer is caught, justice is served and it is time for Chloe to leave for Chicago. Wait what? That doesn’t sound right! Nope!

A picturesque setting, likeable characters, an intriguing murder mystery and a dash of humor make From Beer to Eternity an engrossing and delightful cozy mystery. I cannot wait to see what’s next for Chloe.
