Title: A Sprinkling of Murder (A Fairy Garden Mystery #1)
Author: Daryl Wood Gerber
Published on: 30th June 2020
Genre: Cozy Mystery
What a wonderful cozy debut! A Fairy named Fiona, a cute kitty named Pixie, a fairy garden-making workshop and an amateur sleuth, is this the first ever fairy cozy mystery or what? 🙂
I absolutely loved every bit of A Sprinkling of Murder. Meet Courtney Kelly, our protagonist. She believes in fairies and owns Open Your Imagination – a fairy-themed garden and knickknacks shop. She also hosts DIY fairy-garden workshops and a book club. Wowie! I am moving to Carmel once the lockdown is relaxed. Uh-huh!
Courtney isn’t your usual amateur sleuth. Her dad was a police officer. Courtney’s mum passed away when Courtney was ten. Mum had believed in fairies and so did little Courtney. After her mother’s demise, Courtney retreated into a cocoon and stopped believing in the magical world. Years later, after being dumped by her fiance, Courtney decided to move back to her hometown Carmel, and start a Fairy Garden Store. That is when she met Fiona – a naughty Fairy.
Mick Walker owns a dog grooming business in the same building as Fiona. Logan, the landlord, asks Mick to vacate the premises immediately and the duo get into a fight. The next morning, Mick is found dead in Courtney’s shop. Fiona alerted Courtney to the murder but when the cops come in, Courtney cannot tell them about Fiona – mainly because they do not believe in fairies.
With the help of her best friend Meaghan, shop help Joss, and Fiona, Courtney decides to clear her name from the suspects list. As the story proceeds, there’s the angle of jealousy – Mick was having an affair so did his wife kill him in a fit of rage? Or, was Courtney the real target and the killer ‘mistakenly’ killed Mick?
Wonderful character portrayal and a story that makes you believe in fairies and everything magical, this book is a must-read cozy of the year. Since we are all going through a period of uncertainty, we could do with some fairy dust, don’t we? 🙂 The suspense is well-maintained and the red-herrings are sure to send you on the wrong path. Courtney is a good sleuth albeit amateur. Fiona adds a dash of naughtiness to the story.
As a debut to the series, we are introduced to a potential love interest. Will Courtney and Brady get together in the future? Only time will tell. Maybe a little bit of magic in their (would-be) budding romance is all one need. 🙂 The ending is a little surprising and different. The mystery behind the murder keeps you hooked on to the story till the end.
If you are looking for a magical and charming read, then A Sprinkling of Murder by Daryl Wood Gerber is THE book for you. 🙂
Many thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the ARC. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
