If someone asked me yesterday how I envisioned a perfect day, I would have told them a morning swim in the ocean followed by a day on a lounge chair with a good book and an ice-cold drink. Now I sat on my beloved beach a few feet away from a dead body with my blissful notion spoiled.
Title: Southern Sass and a Crispy Corpse (A Marygene Brown Mystery #2)
Author: Kate Young
Published on: 26th May 2020
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Marygene has gone skinny-dipping and she swims right into a burnt corpse. Woah! Nice way to start your day, Marygene! Eddie and Alex arrive at the scene, and so does the new deputy Javier Reyes. Alex and Marygene had a tiff last night and she’s still fuming. Finding a corpse didn’t do her mood any good.
Marygene is asked to give her statement at the police station and she’s interviewed by Javier Reyes. He’s nothing but downright rude and she dislikes him. Marygene and her sister are catering at Yvonne’s event; Marygene and Sam come across another burned body in the attic. It’s more than just a double homicide when it becomes clear that the charred remains were identical in more than one way.
How does Marygene fit into all this mess? Marygene’s mam left for the heavenly abode some time ago but mama needed to amends before going into the light. She’s back on earth, as a spirit. Mama claims her connection with Marygene might attract some more souls – the ones seeking justice for their murders.
Marygene is back with another mystery! This time, it’s more than just a usual murder mystery. Some secrets of the islanders will be out in the open, the reporters will have a field day, and Marygene will end up learning a lot about her mama.
I read the debut in this series Southern Sass and Killer Cravings a few months ago and I was looking forward to reading the next installment. This series is a tad different from the cozy mysteries I have read so far. The sassy spirit of mama surely adds a unique touch to this series.
Marygene is a strong and well-portrayed character. She’s come back to Peach Cove after divorcing her abusive husband. Things were slowly getting back to normal when she came across her first dead body – in her diner!! She and Alex have been best friends for years now but as a couple, they do not seem to go along well. Marygene has trust issues but one cannot blame her. She’s been through a divorce and she’s also a survivor of abuse.
Betsy plays quite a role in the story. Betsy is the help at the diner. She and Marygene go sleuthing and land into a mush. Betsy is your happy-go-lucky girl and a true friend of Marygene. Jena Lynn, Marygene’s sister, is supportive of Marygene and so are a few more form the island.
Coming to the mystery behind the charred corpses, I already told you the victims were identical in more than one way. What’s more shocking is the results of their autopsies. A missing person case from two decades ago comes back to haunt Eddie (The Sheriff/Marygene’s biological father) and a few more islanders. No matter how hard one tries, secrets of their misdoings will have to come out in the open one fine day. Mama will make sure of it! Uh-huh!
I absolutely enjoyed every bit of this fast-paced mystery. Kate Young is a versatile writer and her storytelling skills are mind-blowing. twists and turns kept me hooked on to the story. The pacing was simply perfect and so was the plot to story development. This book is making into my best reads of 2020, that’s for sure. I highly recommend you to read Southern Sass and a Crispy Corpse. Though this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone.
