Title: Killer Chardonnay (A Colorado Wine Mystery #1)
Author: Kate Lansing
Publication Date: 26th May 2020
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Parker Valentine has always dreamed of opening her own winery in her hometown of Boulder, Colorado. A food and wine critic arrives unexpectedly at Vino Valentine on opening day and Parker doesn’t want a negative review. Things go awry when the food and wine critic collapses and dies shortly after drinking her chardonnay.
Parker’s newly opened winery becomes infamously famous. The internet trolls and haters give Parker a hard time. Parker’s business might close soon. What Parker needs to do is find the killer before it is too late.
What a wonderful start to a new cozy series. The unique part about this series is that Parker only owns the winery – she buys the grapes from farmers. Likeable characters, engrossing mystery and excellent storytelling make Killer Chardonnay a killer cozy series debut. 😀
Parker has some issues with her parents. They have always supported her older brother, Liam – financially or otherwise – while Parker was left to fend for herself. Her parents were busy and couldn’t make it on the D-Day. Liam arrives with a guest in tow while Sage, Parker’s best friend arrives with her aloof boyfriend Jason. The surprise is when the wine critic arrives, sips chardonnay, writes something on his tablet and walks into the restroom. Parker peeks into the tablet and sees the critic’s harsh review of her wine. The critic hasn’t come out of the restroom so Parker goes in, only to find him lying on the floor – dead.
As a debut in the series, Lansing has given preference to the romance angle. We have two contenders for Parker – Eli and Reid. Eli is the local detective in charge of the wine critic’s murder while Reid is the guest Liam brought in.
Reid and parker strike a business deal; Eli and Parker have known each other since school and they spend some time rock climbing. But the readers are given a hint about Eli’s feelings for Parker. Liam might have screwed up his life a lot of times but there is one thing he’s keen on – (No spoilers). Sage is a nerdo and so is her boring boyfriend.
The mystery behind the murder keeps you guessing until the end. The reader is given hints about the identity of the killer. Ooh yes, for the cat lover in you, Parker owns a cat named Zin. Cute!!
A murder mystery with interesting characters and a dash of wine or two make Killer Chardonnay an engrossing and entertaining read. I am certainly waiting to see what’s next for Parker and Liam. A wonderful start to the cozy series, I highly recommend you to read this book.
