Bronwyn Crewse has taken over her family ice-cream business – Crewse Creamery – in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Due to unexpected construction delays, she ends up opening the renovated store on the first day of snow. Whoosh! With no customers coming over to the ice cream store on a cold and snowy day, a dejected Bronwyn(Win) walks home with wounded pride. She finds a recipe for snow ice cream in her late grandma’s recipe tin and rushes back to the store, wanting to shovel some fresh snow from the bottom of the falls and use it to make ice cream. She finds a dead body on the way to the Chagrin Falls. The dead man had an old feud with the Crewses and Win’s father becomes the primary suspect.
What a wonderful series debut! A murder, a closely-knit town, snow and loads of ice cream – A Deadly Inside Scoop is a perfect summer read.
I really like quirky characters in a story. Normal is BORING! In this story, we have two quirky ladies – meet Riya and Maisie, Win’s best friends. Riya is half-Indian and half-Italian and a master in taekwondo, jujitsu and whatnot. Maisie is a whole new … um, species?! She knows for sure her boss Ari murdered Peter Sellers – no, not the actor! This Peter Sellers is the guy who was supposed to work at Ari’s restaurant but he never turned up – he was lying dead at the bottom of the Chagrin Falls, you see…
So, where was I? Maisie. Maisie knows for sure her boss is a murderer; she then comes across some evidence which implicates someone else as the murderer and guess who flipped? Our very own Maisie. Now she’s sure her boss is not the murderer! She wants to be the next Agatha Raisin or Vera or Rosemary and Thyme! My, my!
Bronwyn aka Win is a strong and independent woman. Being the only girl child and the youngest of the four Crewse siblings, her family has her back at all times. When she had a breakdown, her father took her to the best doctors; when she decided to come home and take charge of the family business, her family supported her. They even help her out at the ice cream store. And so do her best friends Riya and Maisie.
No cozy is complete without a handsome fella playing our heroine’s love interest. Meet Morrison Kaye aka O. O works as a law professor at the university. Maisie and Win’s mum are busy playing cupid – they ‘know for sure’ Morrison likes Win. Since this is the series debut, the romance angle isn’t explored much but I am certainly waiting to see if any sparks fly between these two.
It is hard to believe this book is the first in this series. Abby Collette has surely explored a lot of things in this book – we have the ice cream shop and mouth-watering ice cream flavours, we have ‘the old family secret’ and a murder. Maisie and Win go on stakeout and this is surely the quirkiest part of the story. The identity of the murderer is well-hidden until the end. The storytelling is brilliant and so is the character portrayal.
A Deadly Inside Scoop is a highly recommended cozy mystery. For the ice cream lover in you, there are a few recipes at the end of the book. Oh yes, make sure you sit with a big bowl of ice cream while reading this book. 😀
