Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Annabelle Hunter’s Number’s Up.
If you have read my review of Leg Up and Stir Up by Annabelle Hunter, you would know that I am all praises for her quirky stories. While Leg Up and Stir Up form a part of the Lark Davis mysteries, Number’s Up is a spin-off of the same series and is called Barrow Bay Mystery series.
Jennifer Ward is Lark’s best friend and a workaholic. In Stir Up, the readers were given a gist of what was happening in Jen’s life. She unearths illegal trading that her boss is a part of and complains it to the responsible authorities. Weeks later, she finds a handsome hunk at her doorstep. Meet Nicholas Kelly, the handsome hunk-ish FBI agent that Jen is drooling over.
Given her past ‘failed’ relationships, Jen isn’t sure if she should jump in and woo the FBI agent before anyone else could. She throws her attitude around (in tons!!) but the chap is still gaga over her. Her boss – Henry’s murder – puts Jen’s career in jeopardy. Also, the man considered her to be like his daughter. Jen wants to find out who wanted to kill him and why?
I want QUIRKY!! Lark is hilarious! Lark is quirky-crazy! Jen is calm – not saintly calm though.
The story starts on a slow note but picks up the pace when Henry is found dead. I might not have liked Jen a lot but there is someone whom I really adored. He’s none other than Agent Unimportant aka Asshat aka Wolverine aka Cyclops aka Nicholas Kelly! Phew, whatta name!
Nic is a sweetheart. FBI or not, the guy is charming and cares for Jen. Aww! Also, there were two new characters in the story and they are related somehow to Lark – no spoilers here 😀 Lark is in for a huge surprise in the next book. Uh-huh!
Fraud, friendship, love (fake or otherwise), family and much more, the story is interesting and entertaining. Henry’s murder mystery had a surprising end to it. (Think Hi-yaah!) There weren’t any Captain America-ish moments here – Nic is Wolverine, remember?
The ending was good, things seem to settle a bit for Jen and Nic and I am really curious to know what happens next. Lark also makes a guest appearance in the story and as usual, she’s her quirky self. The Barrow Bay-ers are also their crazy self. Jen gets Barrow Bay-ed! No spoilers, sweetie! 😀
Overall, this was a fun read. Jen is nothing like Lark but she’s likeable as long as you and Nic and everyone else put up with her attitude. 😉
