Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Colleen Shogan’s Gore in the Garden.

GORE IN THE GARDEN BANNER 1 640

Kit Marshall is the chief of staff for Maeve Dixon. Kit is happy to see her dear brother Sebastian. As Doug (Kit’s husband), Meg (Kit’s best friend), Deb and Kit pay a visit to the botanical gardens to see the corpse flower in full bloom, hardly do they know that they would come across a dead body.

Rhonda Jackson, Maeve’s boss insists that Kit join hands with Detective O’Halloran in solving the case. Kit has helped in solving crimes previously so she readily agrees. Amateur Sleuth Kit Marshall is back in action! The detective warns her saying that he would be doing all the dangerous work – the last time something like this happened, Kit’s life was in danger.

With the help of Meg, Doug, and Sebastian, Kit finally makes a breakthrough in the case but is it too late? Is Kit’s life in danger again?

Gore in the Garden is the fifth book in A Washington Whodunit series. I haven’t read the previous books in this series but I had no problem in following the story so yes, this can be read as a standalone.

As the story starts, the readers are introduced to Kit, our narrator/main character. She’s on her way back home and is wary of her beloved dog Clarence’s antics. Give him a chance and he will dash out of the door and into the corridor, barking his lungs out! But today, Clarence is not at the door, waiting for Kit. He seems to favor Sebastian over his owner.

Meg has taken a break from dating and it seems to bring out a new personality in her. Well, at least it did until she met Sebastian!! Doug is his usual quiet self but as Kit starts to investigate the case, he offers his help.

The story is set in the Capitol Hill and it reminded me a tad of the sitcom -The Veep. Trevor reminded me of Jonah. 😀 In fact, every time Trevor was mentioned in the story, I could picture the actor playing Jonah in my mind.

The story is well-paced and the suspense is well-maintained until the very end! I do mean it when I say ‘the very end’ because it was almost at the end of the story (somewhere around 95% according to kindle) when Kit and the perp come face to face.

There were a couple of red herrings and the suspects’ list was long. With false alibis (everybody in the list seemed to have an alibi) and dirty politics, the story keeps you engrossed and hooked.

The characters are likeable. The mystery, the writing and story development is simply superb. I really enjoyed reading Gore in the Garden and I hope you will too. 🙂
